Designer Dialogue: Samu-Jussi Koski of Samuji

December 27 2013

Samuji Designer Samu-Jussi Koski of Samuji, Unlined Tote by Samuji

Samuji, the women's clothing and accessories line designed by its namesake creative studio in Helsinki Finland, is based on a permanence and timelessness that transcends seasonal trends. Founded by Samu-Jussi Koski in 2009, Samuji pieces are crafted from premium quality materials from Europe and Japan, and is distinguished across international press and retail concepts. The line is a perfect fit for roztayger because of Samuji's ambition to produce everlasting and sustainable design that serves purpose yet tells a story. In this Designer Dialogue, we check in with the founder for more insights about his brand and creative inspiration.

You were at Marimekko for many years. What inspired you to leave and start your our collection?
I worked at Marimekko for almost 10 years and it was a wonderful learning experience for me. However it was a natural transition to move on as my ambitions changed as I grew with the profession and I wanted to create a different concept. I wanted to see what else this business and it's different aspects had to offer.

Who do you envision as your target client and what are her characteristics?
I’m designing for women that are interested in art, architecture and the world around them. This is why we like to shoot our feeling books in the homes of Finnish artists that we look up to and are inspired by.

How did growing up in Finland affect the way you design?
Finland is located in the crossroads of the East and West. It shows in the design, which is not just plain, minimalistic and functional like the Scandinavian design in general. It also includes the exoticism of the East such as colourful prints and ornaments.

What bag in your collection is your personal favorite?
Leather Unlined tote is my favourite from the collection. I carry my laptop, notebook and all the daily essentials in it. The bag is a unisex style for both women and men.

What's your creative vision for Samuji? Do you have any exciting projects in the works?
Samuji aspires to create clothes and accessories that both tell a story and serve a purpose. They are meant to be worn season after season and become their wearer’s trusted and beloved wardrobe. We choose carefully all the fabrics that are of highest quality and we know all our suppliers personally. In addition, we like to keep our production as near as possible. Our most recent and exciting project was the launch of the men's collection this fall.

If you weren't a designer, what career would you pursue?
I think I would live in the countryside and work as a gardener or sheep breeder.

What music are you currently listening to?
The Norwegian band, Kings of Convenience.

Grandma Roz’s Topaz Ring

December 16 2013

GrandmaRozsRing

For as long as I can remember, Grandma Roz wore this topaz ring on her right hand. It’s nothing terribly fancy or expensive but I always think of it as very elegant and very HER. When she passed away, I asked to keep her ring as a memento of the amazing person she was. She was kind and big hearted, always thinking of others before herself. She was funny, sweet, and self-deprecating. And yes, she loved design and the arts and always championed women and the underdogs of the world (as I do!). She always enjoyed the intimacy of real relationships versus the platform of big and self-aggrandizing. She was a very real and down to earth, lovely person.

I started roztayger with a nod to her influence on my life growing up and to her courage, strength, and big heart. I wear the ring when I want to feel stronger and more confident. I imagine that she is with me encouraging and supporting me…and it actually does work! All three of roztagyer photoshoots have included Grandma Rosalind’s ring in a handful of shots. If you look closely, you can find it!

Stress-Free Holiday Gift Giving

December 10 2013

I’m the worst gift giver. I’m convinced of it. I worry that the gift won't resonate with the recipient, that I didn’t spend enough or that my wrapping sucks. The last point tends to be true, although I’ve worked hard to improve my wrapping technique.

The more important a person is in my life, the harder it is for me to be content with my gifting choices, which means my immediate family and my girlfriend are probably the ones I worry about the most. I found a few years ago that it eased pressure if I spaced out shopping for and giving gifts over the entire calendar period. I also find that it makes giving a gift more about the act itself and less about the obligatory adherence to the admonitions of The 3 Wise Men, Cupid, and the Birthday Fairy. In other words, giving for giving’s sake.

I’ve worked retail long enough to know that shopping under stress is inherently a male trait. Between December 23rd and December 24th, there’ll be lines outside Pandora, Sephora, and other purveyors of the answer to Men’s notions of what women want; lines of glazed-eyed men who will grab whatever’s left on the shelf and would pay a larger premium to assuage their last-minute guilt. I know this because I’ve seen them and would be in that line if good sense and better choices didn't prevail.

Now, for major gifting occasions, I have a Rule of 3. Three gifts comprising:

  1. Premium Desired - something I know the recipient (let's not kid ourselves here, it's the GF we're talking about) would have wanted but not bought for herself.

  2. Whimsical - something I would want the recipient to have—usually fun and unique.

  3. Practical - usually a melange of things the recipient uses on a daily basis.

JPantherRucTmodel
Premium Desired: Ruc Tote by J.Panther Luggage Co.

EtiquetteBlkWhiteStrip
Whimscal Gift: Men's Socks by Etiquette Clothiers

BellroyPassSlvTan1
Practical Gift: Passport Sleeve by Bellroy

I’ve found that this allows for gifts that at least include a bit of my personality and taste. I also keep the number of stores/retailers I buy from to a minimum. It’s weird, but I believe in habit and ritual and I also believe in giving business to retailers I have rapport or affinity with or are in some way connected to the gift recipient. As I’ve gotten older, it’s become less about the Black Friday-styled frenzied shopping and more about gift discovery.

How else is a guilt-prone man supposed to do his shopping?

Winter Warrior: Bonastre Saco Pouch

December 02 2013

Happy December, Darlings!

As a child of the northernmost regions of Europe, winter is not just in my blood — it's also omnipresent in my wardrobe. My Scandinavian sensibilities squeal for creamy knits, winter whites and all things warm and wonderful. This year, however, I've learned the importance of contrast. A dash of delicious dark black can go a long way. Case in point: this perfect leather pouch by Bonastre. It follows me everywhere I go. Through the quiet streets of Chelsea on a Sunday afternoon, down the slippery stairs of the subway on a slushy Monday morning, and far from the city's maddening crowds on a chilly getaway in November. Come to think of it, all the chunky cashmere in the world can't compete with this stunning and stoic winter warrior.
