Belgium Trip part II: Utrecht and Amsterdam

June 26 2013

My trip to Belgium Trip part I: Ghent and Brussels started in Ghent and from there I spent the rest of my trip in Utrecht and Amsterdam. Upon leaving Ghent we took exactly 3 trains to get to visit Ferry Meewisse, designer of the amazing Frrry line. It was a quick visit but I knew it would be worth the trip! Ferry answered the door of his beautiful turn of the century home. Standing tall at 6 foot 8(guessing), this vertically laid out floor plan seemed an appropriate look for his abode. It was a treat to see the charming setting of his home and workspace where he makes all his incredible Frrry pieces. In his workroom, I was able to see his patterns, the machinery he uses to make the collection and some shoes that he makes for personal consumption. Apparently he makes almost all his clothing which is quite impressive. Clearly this is a passion. How he has time to do this as well as take on his own bag collection and wholesale business is impressive! Designing without regard for season or gender and outside of the constraints of trend he still manages to be marketable and unique! We left Utrecht and trained to Amsterdam where the adventure continued. Off the train the smell of French fries and marijuana was prevalent and palpable. We checked-in and immediately starting wandering – weaving in and out of the bevy of bikes that were literally everywhere. We ended up having amazing Indonesian food the first night at a place called Tempo Doeloe and after dinner we again wandered the canals and took in the eclectic ambiance.

The next day we met with the folks at Travelteq, an amazing collection we are hoping to carry next season. We had a nice experience sitting with Michiel Van Ogtrop, of Travelteq. We chatted about the inception of their line and discussed their plans for the future.

Later we visited the newly renovated Rijks Museum which had just reopened after 11 years. It was amazing architecturally and of course the art housed there – wow - to see 4 Vermeer paintings in one place is an amazing experience for someone who is obsessed with 17C Dutch Art.

Our last night in Amsterdam we were off to an incredible dinner at a small restaurant recommended to us by Travelteq called De Compagnon (near the Red Light District – my husband enjoyed the walk there tremendously). The restaurant was in a very old house from 1900 – full of charm and delicious food. To top it off we met a lovely couple from Amsterdam that shared their wine with us. It was the end to a nearly perfect day of travel.

What is fatherhood, beyond the biological thought?

June 16 2013

NEW-ALW-EB-darth1-620x349

I've always wondered what it would be like to be a father. Yes, I know I'm only hindered by generic and anatomical constraints. What is fatherhood, beyond the biological thought? What qualities transcend place and origins? What are the enduring qualities of a father figure? Here's my list, the code I would love by if I were a Dad. What's on yours?

1. Laugh especially when the joke's at your own expense.

2. Always have a friend who tells you the truth. Especially when your clothes don't fit right.

3. Keep 1-3 gifts in reserve, wrapped and ready to go. You never know when you need a "get out of the doghouse" pass. Flowers are cliche, how about an accessory that won't need water or wilt after 5 days?

4. Know at least one good story to tell a kid.

5. Know at least one good joke to tell an adult.

6. In every town you're visited, know at least one great restaurant and one great ice cream parlor.

7. Wear your gray and wrinkles with pride. You earned them the hard, honorable way.

8. Own a watch that can be passed on to your son.

9. Own a scarf that can be passed on to your daughter. It's the 21st Century after all!

10. Look in the mirror and thank your Dad, but especially your Mom.

Belgium Trip part I: Ghent and Brussels

June 07 2013

Belgium is very charming. It has a few things going for it - amazing beer (Triple Carmelita – my new favorite and I don’t normally like beer), delicious fresh fries (normally don’t love these either), old world architecture and fascinating history!

Ghent:

Our first stop was Ghent. We spent 4 days here during my husband’s engineering conference. While he and his comrades are talking technology, I wandered the streets and took in some sites and ambiance. I saw the Van Eyck altarpiece – a seminal painting that is in every Art History book.

I had a chance to visit the Dutch Design Museum and the Ghent Castle with its authentic guillotine and torture chamber display… definitely eerie. My next stop was a brief shopping trip and visited a few boutiques and managed to do damage but of course I saved so much on the VAT that I will get back - rationalization at work.

Brussels:

My favorite part of the trip was meeting with designers! I took a train to Brussels (45 minutes away) and met with Ana Marchal of Atelier Marchal. I met Ana and her brother Joseph (they are a team in the business) in Paris at Tranoi in March. Having grown up in Mallorca, Spain they moved around quite a bit separately before settling in Brussels to pursue their bag collection. Joseph had been a designer for some years while Ana worked in the financial world with a love of fashion. The Atelier Marchal store is quite charming and illustrates their vision. Ana and Joseph work side-by-side on all aspects of the business and are hands on with design, production and quality control which takes place in both Spain and Brussels. The leathers are lush and the shapes are modern and minimal. They mix in exotics with some strong, off-beat colors but their black bags are their best sellers. In addition, I was able to see some styles that were not at the show that I had to add to my Fall order! One favorite was a giant black leather tote with purple grosgrain lining that can be folded and tucked into a smaller shape. Ana explained that the boutique in Brussels allows them to interact with clients in person which fuels and reinforces design for their wholesale business. I love the fact that it’s a brother sister team. Being an only child I am quite jealous but I am thinking maybe my two little people will do something together down the road. One can dream. For now though they will just continue to fight over who gets to have the bigger bowl of ice cream!

Best,
