Frida Zazou

Frida Zazou began with a conversation in a Paris brasserie on a cold, wet night. The woman at the next table introduced herself as Frida and talked about music, dance, and the city she had adopted as her own. Zazou was the nickname that stayed with her from the war years, when loving jazz marked you as one of a certain kind. The founders left with the story and named the label after her.

Everything is made in Italy from Italian cloth, much of it woven in the Como and Prato districts. The interest is in surface. Fabrics are crinkled, embossed, gathered, and quilted before they are cut, where texture registers before shape does. Every style is given a first name, and the colors keep their Italian ones.

Frida Zazou Clothing - Italian Fabric, Milanese Making

Founded in Milan in 2017 and named for a woman met one winter night in Paris, Frida Zazou produces womenswear in Italy from Italian cloth. Fabric leads the design. Weaves are crinkled, embossed, gathered and quilted before cutting, most of it from the mills of Como and Prato. A Frida Zazou coat or a pair of cotton velvet trousers is cut generously and finished simply. Wool, cotton velvet and cashmere blends make up most of the collection, chosen for how they wear over time as much as for how they look. The clothes suit a wardrobe built slowly, where a jacket is expected to last and to sit easily with everything already in it.
