JUD

JUD is a Los Angeles knitwear label founded by Julia, a Yorkshire-born designer with a degree in knitwear design. She worked in London and New York before settling in LA and founding JUD.

The work starts with the traditional British knitting techniques Julia grew up with. New stitches and shapes are developed from them, and every prototype is knitted and assembled in Los Angeles. Some pieces are then produced in Peru with a small group of artisan knitters, and each knitter's individual style shows in the finished piece. Others are made in Los Angeles on hand flat knitting machines. The process is manual and slower than industrial knitting, with each row knitted individually. Yarns for the LA pieces come from the UK and Italy, spun specifically for this kind of machine.

JUD Knitwear & Sweaters Designed in Los Angeles

JUD is a knitwear label based in Los Angeles. Its founder, Julia, was born in Yorkshire and studied knitwear design before working in London and New York.

Every JUD design begins as a prototype knitted and assembled in Los Angeles. Production then moves to Peru, where a small network of artisan knitters work within their own communities. Each piece reflects the individual style of the knitter who made it. The partnership also supports the economic independence of the artisans involved.

Other JUD pieces are made in Los Angeles on hand flat knitting machines. The process is manual, and each row is knitted individually. It is slower than industrial knitting and suited to small runs. Yarns for the LA pieces come from the UK and Italy, spun specifically for hand flat machine knitting.

JUD cotton is GOTS certified and grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Buttons are natural corozo, made from tagua palm seeds, and each has its own grain.

JUD wool needs little washing. Airing it out lets the natural lanolin in the fiber do the cleaning. When a wash is necessary, cold water and minimal agitation keep the wool from felting or shrinking.
